Like so many towns and smaller cities in the Texas Hill Country, Liberty Hill is a Texas community that has a history dating back to the 1800s and is now experiencing newfound growth. There’s a lot to love about this Williamson County town located between the north and south forks of the San Gabriel River.
Whether you’re a Texas transplant or a lifelong resident of Central Texas who just hasn’t explored Liberty Hill much, this area has a lot to offer.
Liberty Hill is just under a 40-minute drive from Austin’s city center, making it a convenient option for people who work in Austin but want to live somewhere with a slower pace of life. The town was founded in the 1840s by a group of settlers and officially became known as Liberty Hill in the 1850s. While its population has grown since the 19th century, it's still considered a small town with a 2020 census population of 3,646 residents.
Liberty Hill might be much smaller than Round Rock or Georgetown, but it is actually experiencing record growth. In just the last 10 years, the town's population has grown by 277%, according to Austin Culture Map. With that growth has come plans for the development of new master-planned communities such as the 1,600-home Lariat community, as well as new businesses and community events.
One of the coolest things for history buffs to explore in Liberty Hill is Fort Tumbleweed. Founded by Texas historians Len and Lynda Kubiak, the attraction is a massive collection of Texas relics and memorabilia documenting the area’s settlement from when the area was home to Native American tribes up through the 19th and early 20th centuries.
For some modern-day fun, Liberty Hill has several annual events and festivals that bring the entire community together. The four most popular events include the spring Whimsy and Wonder Festival, the Independence Day Spectacular, the fall Sculpture Festival, and December Christmas Festival. Each of these free and family-friendly events gives residents an opportunity to shop local vendors, enjoy food and music, and be involved in the community.
The town is also home to two popular parks: City Park and Wetzel Park. City Park includes a playground, a walking trail, several soccer fields, a football field, basketball courts, and opening in 2023, the Liberty Hill Swim Center.
Wetzel Park is a popular park with children who flock to its free splash pad to cool off in the summer months. It also has several picnic facilities that can be enjoyed by visitors to the park.
Children who live in Liberty Hill are zoned to the Liberty Hill Independent School District. The school district educates around 5,500 students and includes five elementary schools, two middle schools, and Liberty Hill High School – go Panthers!
